Year 4 2018-2019
Year Four have been looking at teeth and dental hygiene.
We used disclosing tablets to look at plaque on our teeth and discuss how to clean our teeth.
We also investigated the effects of some drinks on our teeth. We considered water, breakfast orange, coke, vinegar and cordial. We left an egg in the different liquids for a week and observed what happened.
The water had no effect on the egg shell. The coke and the cordial turned the eggshell various shades of brown and black! The breakfast orange made a large cavity at one end of the egg where the shell had disappeared altogether and the vinegar totally dissolved the shell and the whole egg swelled in size!
Here we learnt the importance of cleaning our teeth after drinking liquids other than water to protect our teeth. The children thought the breakfast orange would not harm teeth and were very surprised by the result and the fact that it has a lot of natural sugar in the drink.
We have had a lot of fun with our science work this term.
