Today's Challenge:

English Activity

The children have been sent home with packs and within these are lots of independent writing activities, spelling activities as well as some reading tasks.

To add to this I will be setting assignments for the children on various websites. All of the usernames and passwords for these will either be in the children's packs or their homework books.

These will include:

English activities on Education City https://www.educationcity.com/

Spelling activities on Spelling Shed https://play.edshed.com/login

English activities on Purple Mash https://www.purplemash.com/sch/stbarts-ol12

Children are familiar with all of these sites.

I will send notifications by email when assignments are live so that you know which websites to be looking at.

Week beginning Monday 20th April:

Spelling Rule: Adding ‘-er’ to words ending in y. The y is changed to an i.

English: SPAG Mat 3; 'All about butterflies' from your reading revision booklet; 'Using conjunctions and recognising conjunctions' activities on Education City; and

Write an adventure story about a polar bear who gets lost from your writing pack.

  • Think of a beginning - Why/ how does the polar bear get there?
  • Think of an exciting middle- What happens? Who does he meet?
  • Think of an exciting ending- How does he get back to where he should belong?

Use your writing checklist and Vocabulary sheets to help make it superb!

Don't forget to use our new 'whoosh up' handwriting when completing your creative writing tasks.

Science

This half term our topic is called 'The Wind In The Willows'

This half term we will be looking at:

Living things in their environments

This half term children will learn about a variety of habitats and the plants and animals that live there. They will learn to tell the difference between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive, and apply this in a range of contexts. They will make observations
of a local habitat (if possible) and the creatures that live there, investigating conditions in local microhabitats and how they affect the minibeasts found within them. The children will research a range of global habitats and how the living things that live there are suited to
their environments, and also look at how animals depend on plants to survive (food chains).

Create a nature journal (just with paper or whatever you have) to display your work over the next few weeks.

Give it a title, write about anything you found, draw pictures or insert pictures.

Week beginning Monday 20th April:

  • Explore your garden, or yard . What do you notice? What if you looked closer? What animals/ plants did you spot? Take photos of anything you find in your garden.
  • Imagine you were to go on a walk down Healey Dell or any other local woods or nature reserves, what animals do you think you would see? Make (or draw) a list of the animals you think you would find. At the moment we can't go on this walk, so use your imagination, research Healey Dell or draw on experiences from past visits you might have had.

Dead or Alive?

Can you identify the differences between an alive animal and an animal that is not alive or has never been alive (like a toy spider)?

Make a list of what an alive animal can do and what animals that are not alive can't do.

Think about how it moves, feeds, grows and uses its senses.

Please send pictures or information to the Year 2 email address which is: year2@st-bartholomews.lancs.sch.uk

Maths Activity

The children have been sent home with packs and within these are lots of different maths activities, including: x tables, shape, number work, symmetry etc.

Maths: On Education City complete 'Hang Tenths', 'Over the line' and 'Ridiculous Rods' activities and linked activities if possible. If you can not access this, please complete 'Eggs Tens and Ones', 'Number representations to 100' and 'Clue 1 from The Mystery at the Grand Portrait Gallery' activity from your maths pack.

Geography

This half term our topic is called 'The Wind In The Willows'

During the summer term, children will be thinking about what happens during the season of summer, what the weather is like in summer including what happens to the length of the day, and what happens to plants and animals. Children will make links to learning in science and previous work on hot and cold places of the world in Year One.

I would like you to create an ongoing journal (just with paper or whatever you have) to present the information and answer the key questions. There will be a new one every week.

Week beginning Monday 20th April:

Key question

  • What is the weather like today / this week / this time of year?

Activities / Enquiry

  • Watch today’s weather forecast on the BBC Weather website (here). Can children pick out key geographical information such as the sort of weather that is expected and key places in the UK on the weather map?
  • Enter your town into the search box on the BBC Weather website (here) to find the weather forecast for the next five days. Can children work out what each of the weather symbols means? Check the weather each day against the forecast.
