Year 3 working at home - SPRING TERM

Home Learning: Week 2.

Week beginning 30th March, 2020.

I had such a lovely day yesterday, speaking to most of you. Year 3, I really miss not seeing you each day, it was great to hear your voices and learn about all the great things you have been doing at home. When we get back together, we will have some lovely time listening to what we have all been doing. Keep all the work you do and all the things you make and bring them into school. Mr. Crabtree came into our classroom yesterday and said, once again, how fantastic your Iron Man Projects were!

I have been in school some days, when I haven't been there I have been cleaning my house and going out for my daily exercise.

English Activity


Diary Entry

Year 3, please keep writing your Diary Entry, remember to include your personal feelings, as well (just like Hogarth did when we wrote our diaries in class) It was great to hear the different ways you are recording this, I look forward to displaying the written ones and watching the PowerPoints. (Remember, when Sophie, Corey and Arabella did theirs sitting in my chair!)


Writing Instructions 

Write a set of instructions, for a friend, to make a moving picture, use mine (under technology) to help you with the layout.

Remember instructions are:

Short, simple sentences which are easy to follow.

Numbered 1, 2, 3 etc.

Have a picture or photograph.

Include a title and the sub-headings Equipment and Method.

Remember time connectives-first, secondly, next, then, after, later, finally.

Include a closing sentence saying what has been made.

Maybe, you could test your instructions on someone in your house to see if they are easy to follow.



Thank you for sending me last week's scores.

As you will now have your new spellings on a Monday, get someone to test you on the following Monday and send me your results.

This week's spellings are: Unit 21 on Spelling Shed - adding the suffix ly to le words. Keep practising!


Practise doing our new handwriting style, where we start on the baseline with each letter. Challenge yourself to get a Pen Licence when we start school again.

 Read to yourself or out loud to an adult for 10 minutes each day. Remember read with expression, pausing at the commas. Try to read a variety of different writing-fiction (stories), non-fiction (real information) poetry. 

Fun Activities...


1.Build a house den. What is it called? Who is allowed in? What's the password?


2. Plan an indoor Treasure Hunt for your Mum, Dad, brother or sister. What clues will you give them? How many treasures will you hide? How do you judge the winner? What's the prize for winning?


3. Make a Boot Camp with different stations- star jumps, forward rolls etc. Time yourself and see if you can improve your time every day.


4. Produce a Rainbow-the symbol of hope. 
The order of the colours are:








The first letters spell the mnemonic Richard of York Gave Battle in Vain.

Can you make up your own one which is more fun?  I'll put it on our website along with pictures of your rainbows. Display your picture in your bedroom window or another window where it can be seen by passers-by.

Handwriting Practice
It is really important that you form your letters correctly. Watch the PowerPoint, that we use in class, to make sure you form each letter correctly and then practise on a piece of paper. This will prepare you to join your letters.
Make sure each letter is the correct size, too!
The letters  b  d  h  k  l  t   are all ascenders - tall letters
The letters  f  g   j   p   q   y  are all descenders - come down below the line.
all the rest are small letters .
How to watch the pencil form the letters:
Click on Download Document. 
Once downloaded open it up by clicking on it.
Click on Slideshow at the top, grey panel.
Then click on From Beginning, left hand side.
Keep clicking until you get to the alphabet.
Click on the letter you want to practise and then click on the pencil.
Watch how the pencil forms the letter.

Maths Activity

      Time continued 

Telling the time- it is great to hear about the different methods you are using to help you learn to tell the time. Keep practising because it might be a while before you have totally got it! We will be doing Time Challenges- I wonder who will be the quickest?

Roman Numerals- we need to know the Roman Numerals up to 12.

Have a go go at learning these, it's like learning a secret code. When you know all 12 of them get someone at home to test you. Ask them to send me an e-mail and give yourself a DJ.

1 = I                    5 = V                        9 = IX (1 before 10)

2 = II                   6 = VI (1 after 5)        10 = X

3 = III                  7 = VII (2 after 5)       11 = XI (1 after 10)

4 = IV (1 before 5)     8 = VIII (3 after 5)     12 =XII (2 after 10)

Digital Time

Learn that morning is am and afternoon/evening is pm.

Learn to say and write the digital time:

10 past 7 in the morning is 7:10 am

10 past 7 in the evening is 7:10 pm.

Units of Time

Learn that:                         

1 minute = 60 seconds          1 year = 52 weeks  

1 hour = 60 minutes             1 year = 365 days (a leap year has 365)

1 day = 24 hours                1 year = 12 months

                                   A leap year happens every 4 years.


Times Tables

Wow! I am so impressed you are still practising your times tables everyday and you are timing yourselves to do it in under 3 minutes. Well done, those of you who have got 60/60 for 3 times and have gone up another level. (Award yourself 5 DJs)

Remember to go onto Times Table Rock stars, I am logging how many times you go on!! There are also practice sheets in your packs.

Science: Forces

Thank you for all the fantastic photographs you have e-mailed me. I would have loved our class to have done this together, like our magnet investigations. It looked like you had great fun. Bring your results in and you can see if they are the same as your friend's.

This week, I would like you to roll your vehicle on a slope which is at different angles. The slope can be a plank of wood or anything you can find long enough.

1.Estimate first, at which height the vehicle will travel the furthest along the floor. 

2.Keep it a fair test, by releasing the vehicle at the top of the slope (not pushing) and rolling it on to the same surface.

3.Put one end of your slope, on the floor and then lift the other end so it is different heights off the floor. Place the vehicle at the top of the slope, let it go (without pushing) and record how for it travels along the floor.

Technology: To produce a moving picture of the Iron Man.

In our lessons, we investigated moving and pop up books. I would like you to have a go at making a moving picture of the Iron Man falling off the cliff.  


card (if you can!) or paper, colouring pencils, felt-tips or paint. scissors or a knife (only if an adult is doing it)


1.Research the picture of the Iron Man standing on the brink, don't worry if you can't access the internet make your own up!

2.Draw and colour the Iron Man, cut him out, leaving a long strip at the bottom to move him up and down.

3. Draw the cliff and the sea at the bottom then colour it.

4. Cut a a vertical (going up and down) line the length of the cliff.

5. Push the strip through the gap you have made and slide it up and down!

Hooray- you have made a moving picture!


Art: To produce pieces of art work  using different materials.

 Remember the fantastic drawings and shading you did and the Iron Man picture we made by layering paper. Have a go at producing different pictures of the Iron Man using a range of materials (pencil, tin foil, cardboard, paint, material) Make a collection of your work. Artists call this a portfolio. 


Music: To produce an Iron Man piece of music

You have all the instruments you need for this in your house!

plates, cup, spoons-metal and wooden, plastic bottles, crisp packets etc.

Don't forget your own body-clapping, jumping, whistle, popping, 

Your musical composition should tell a story, in phases:

First:The Iron Man on the brink looking out to sea (quietly thinking)

Second: The Iron Man falling into the sea (loud CRAAASSSHHHINGGG!)

Thirdly: The Iron Man searching on the beach to find each body part (quietly and mysteriously)

Finally: The Iron Man, back together, eating the farmers' machinery (loud, gobbling sound, licking his lips) 

Get your brothers and sisters to help you make the sounds, it's like working in a band! Perform your piece to your family and get them to give you a mark out of /10.
