Riddle of the Day

  • A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river.

He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing.

    man rowboat

If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken.

If the chicken and the corn are left together, the chicken will eat the corn.

How does the man do it?

  • The Solution:

The man and the chicken cross the river, (the fox and corn are safe together), he leaves the chicken on the other side and goes back across.

The man then takes the fox across the river, and since he can't leave the fox and chicken together, he brings the chicken back.

Again, since the chicken and corn can't be left together, he leaves the chicken and he takes the corn across and leaves it with the fox.

He then returns to pick up the chicken and heads across the river one last time.

Well done to Alfie, you guessed correctly!

History Activity

Week 1 & 2

What was invented during the Islamic Golden Age and how have these inventions changed people's lives?

  • Watch the film clip '1001 inventions and the library of secrets' on the 1001 inventions website: https://www.1001inventions.com/media/video/library
  • The inventors featured in the film include:
  • Ibn al-Haytham (early development of the camera obscura).
  • Al-jazari (engineer and early developer of automata).
  • Abbas ibn Firnas (reputed to have attempted flight).
  • Al-Zahrawi (pioneer of modern surgery).
  • Merriam al-ljliya (designer and constructor of astrolabes).

https://www.ducksters.com/history/islam/scientists_scholars.php

https://www.famousinventors.org

Choose an inventor from the film or other inventor from the Islamic Golden Age to research. This could include:

  • When they lived.
  • What they invented and how it was used.
  • How this invention was used and developed through the ages.
  • How this invention is used today.
  • Children could present their research findings using digital presentation formats such as PowerPoint, keynote or Prezi, a poster, leaflet or word document.

Don't forget you can email pictures and other evidence to year5@st-bartholomews.lancs.sch.uk

Science Activity

Week 1 & 2

Introducing air resistance

Additional activities are set under 'Topic City'

on Education City and Purple Mash

  • How can the movement of an object through the air be changed?

Wow launch

  • Objects fall to the ground because all things are attracted by the force of gravity towards the centre of the Earth.
  • How high up would an object need to be to still be attracted to Earth by gravity?
  • Watch the video clip of Felix Baumgartner’s free fall from space on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHtvDA0W34I
  • What happened?
  • What did Felix use to reduce the effect of gravity pulling him down and to ensure a safe landing?
  • Drop two pieces of paper, one flat and one screwed up.
  • Why did they land differently?

Explore / Observe / First hand experiences

  • Consider how you could test how things move through the air.
  • Larger surface areas are harder to move through the air.
  • Make some parachutes to explore. As this is just an ‘explore’ activity you can choose any sized canopy, length of thread, mass of object, materials used and just observe how the parachutes work.
  • Take photographs of your designs and annotate how a parachute works using arrows pointing downwards to represent gravity and upwards to represent air resistance.
  • The ‘Investigation of friction’ video clip on the BBC Bitesize website considers the importance of repeat readings in an investigation
  • https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zht2tfr

Practical investigation / Fair test

  • How can the effects of air resistance be tested?
  • How could you invent the best parachute. Compare three different parachutes, changing either:
  • the size of the parachute.
  • the shape of the parachute.
  • the parachute material.
  • the length of the threads attaching the object to the parachute.
  • the mass of the object attached to the parachute.

Everything else on their parachute must stay the same.

  • Which one of the above do they think will have the biggest effect on the parachute?

The three parachutes you compare within your test must be different enough to give you three very different results e.g. if you are changing the size of the parachute, you shouldn’t change it by just 1cm each time as the effect will not be big enough.

Write up your investigation.
