Homework and Helping children at Home

Homework is given out weekly.

Each class teacher sets homework on a Friday, and this should be returned to school on a Tuesday.

If your child attends breakfast club there is an opportunity for them to complete their homework during that time also.

Help and encouragement from home is essential during primary schooling.

The home-school partnership is a highly valued relationship working together  to provide the best for your child.

Homework

In compliance with Government recommendations the staff and Governors of St. Bartholomew's believe that a sensible programme of homework activities for children in KS1 should be designed to take, on average about 1 hour per week.

At Key Stage 2 the demands should gradually increase so that by Years 5 and 6 children are spending about 30 minutes a day (two and a half hours a week) on homework.

Recommended time allocation for homework

Reception children will be given a piece of homework to work on with parents/carers over the weekend. This is to prepare them for future years.

Years 1 and 2 - 1 hour per week

reading, spelling, literacy and numeracy work.

Years 3 and 4 - 1½ hours per week

literacy and numeracy as for years 1 and 2 with occasional assignments in other subjects.

Years 5 and 6 - 30 minutes per day

regular weekly schedule with continued emphasis on literacy and numeracy but also ranging widely over the curriculum.

Whole School

Daily reading, which the Government recommends for all children, can be done as part of homework. On days when the homework activity is something other than reading, children should be encouraged, in addition, to read - on their own or with others - for a least 20 minutes (less for infants).

Family Help in School

We greatly value the help that parents give to our school both with their time and talents. If you feel that you can offer some time to help support the curriculum either in classroom, or in school as a whole or during out of school activities, please contact the Headteacher. Your offer would be most welcome.

ALL volunteer helpers are subject to the school's safeguarding procedures and are subject to an enhanced CRB clearance.
