SUMMER TERM -WEEK 1-

Year 5 - Working At Home

From 20th April 2020

 

Your child will be set weekly activities for English, Maths, Topic and Spellings. These will be either set activities from the pack they brought home or online activities. I will update this on the year 5 class page and inform you by email, if you have provided your email address. Please keep checking as I will update this page as much as I can. Go noodle! is also a fun free way to get your child active.

The children have been sent home with learning packs, which contain lots of independent writing and reading activities.

Additional to this, I will be setting a number of assignments on the following websites:

 Children are familiar with all of these sites.

Spelling Rule: Words spelled with 'ie' after 'c'. This assignment is now live on Ed Shed!

English: Education City 'SPAG City (Relative Clause) activity.

Purple Mash 'George Misbehaves' (Verb Prefixes).

'The Ascent' writing activity (paper pack).

Choose 1 reading activity (paper-based pack) and read a book every day for at least 10 minutes.

Geography Activity

  • Locate the world’s countries, using maps and focus on North and South America.
  • Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle.
  • Use Google Earth to explore The Amazon Basin. https://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/

Research and answer the following questions:

  • What do you know already about the Amazon Basin region and what would you like to find out?
  • Where in the world is the Amazon Basin and in which countries is it located?
  • What is the physical geography like? (climate, soils, vegetation, rivers, biome).
  • What is the human geography like? (settlement size and character, farming types, extractive industries, transport links, natural resources, environmental impact).
  • How is the rainforest in the Amazon Basin changing? Why is the rainforest changing?
  • What happened, or is still happening, to cause these changes? Do the changes have positive or negative effects?
  • How does this region of South America compare and contrast with regions in the UK, Europe and/or North America?

 Investigate the various crops grown in the rainforests on the Living Rainforest website  https://livingrainforest.org/learning-resources

Investigate which animals live in the Amazon rainforest compared with other rainforests of the world. The Living Rainforest website https://livingrainforest.org/resources-categories/plant-animal-profiles

Follow the course of the Amazon River from source to mouth. Investigate the pattern of the tributaries, using for example, Google Earth https://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/ or Google Maps and switching between maps and satellite view. Explore the associated images and drop the Google yellow stick man onto the map to view significant places and features along the river, such as those in towns and ports. 

The short clip ‘Amazon’s ‘Invisible Flying Rivers’’ on the BBC Futures website https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20130326-amazons-invisible-flying-rivers shows how the Amazon River accounts for one fifth of the world’s river flow as it travels from the heart of South America to the Atlantic Ocean.

  • What are the houses like?
  • How do children travel to school? 
  • Research different farming types from subsistence to commercial concerns – what/where is the market for the produce?
  • Compare trade and other links from this region with other cities/countries – world trade.
  • Investigate the impact of the extractive industries (mining/logging) and transport links on the natural environment.
  • Research the reduction in forested areas (deforestation) and its impact on global climate change.

Create a fact-file or a presentation, using Powerpoint, to present your research.

DT Activity

  • Can you design:
  • A waistcoat for an explorer with pockets to carry tools.
  • An apron to carry garden implements.
  • A belt with pouches or loops to carry equipment.
  • A hanging holder with pockets for storing items in a tent.

Create a drawing of your design.

 

Art Activity

 Create a still life drawing of houseplants using a range of pencils, pens, felt tips, crayons, paints. Use different techniques from drawing lines to using dots to create effect. 

Look at the work of Henri Rousseau for inspiration.

Luke making brownies and a cake.

Alfie has planted vegetable in his garden, as well as making a homemade watering can out of a bottle. He has also been helping his dad clean out the rabbits.

Isla enjoying a walk with her family and has drawn a beautiful picture of what she thinks her pony would look like as a human.
